Size – Width and Projection
Most retractable awnings start around 8–9 feet wide because of how they’re designed. The arms have to fold in neatly when the unit retracts, which makes smaller sizes difficult to manufacture.
As you go wider, you’re using more material—more metal, more fabric—so the price increases.
Our retractable awnings range from 9’6” up to 19’6” wide, with projections of 8’, 10’, and 11’6”. We can also special order units up to 40 feet wide with 16-foot projections.
Keep in mind: a 16-foot wide awning with a 10-foot projection will cost less than one with an 11’6” projection, simply because of the extra fabric.
Operation Type – Manual or Motorized
You’ve got two options: manual or motorized.
Manual awnings are cheaper—but you’ll pay for it in effort. Cranking an awning in and out every day gets old fast.
This is a lifestyle product. Most homeowners use their awning regularly, which is why we only offer motorized options. It’s just a better experience.
Frame and Hood Material
Not all awnings are built the same.
Lower-cost options—like what you might find online—often use plastic or thin aluminum. They’re cheaper, but they don’t hold up well over time.
Higher-quality awnings use thicker, extruded aluminum with a powder-coated finish for durability.
You’ll also want to look at the hood. Basic models leave the fabric roll and motor exposed. Upgraded units use a semi-cassette hood, which protects those components and extends the life of the awning.
Material sourcing matters too—some manufacturers use lower-grade metals, while others use higher-quality aluminum from places known for durability.
Fabric
Fabric plays a huge role in both price and longevity.
Lower-end awnings may use canvas, which is more prone to fading and mildew.
Mid-range options include woven polyester or vinyl-coated materials.
At the top end, you’ve got solution-dyed acrylic fabrics, like Sunbrella. These are highly fade-resistant, breathable, water-repellent, and typically come with long warranties—often around 10 years.
Add-Ons (“Bells and Whistles”)
The most common upgrades are:
- LED lighting
- Wind sensors
- Drop-down shades
Some companies charge extra for these features, while others include them.
For example, our awnings come standard with LED lights and a wind sensor. We also offer a drop shade—a 36-inch screen that rolls down from the front bar—for added sun protection.
When comparing quotes, always ask what’s included and what’s extra.
Installation
Installation is the final piece of the puzzle.
A proper install means the unit is level, securely mounted into structural supports, and the electrical work is done cleanly and correctly.
Some companies include installation in their pricing—others don’t. So make sure you ask: “Is installation included?”
