The cost of hurricane shutters vary widely depending on the type of shutters, material, size, and the complexity of installation. Here’s a basic overview of what you can expect for a simple installation of different types of hurricane shutters.
We’ve outlined what it’ll cost to cover a:
Standard window (36” x 60”)
Standard door (36” x 80”)
Sliding glass door (72” x 80”)
Large opening for motorized hurricane screens (10 ft wide x 9 ft tall).
Keep in mind, material prices fluctuate but this information should provide an expectation ballpark when purchasing hurricane shutters.
Accordion Shutters are the most cost effective shutter options on the market. You’ve probably seen these on homes in Wrightsville Beach. They run on top and bottom tracks and look like “accordions” when deployed and stack on both sides when opened.
Standard window (36” x 60”) $750
Standard door (36” x 80”) $900
Sliding glass door:(72” x 80”) $1200
Roll Down Shutters are one of the most versatile shutter options available as they can be manual or motorized. The shutter rolls down from the top housing on vertical tracks offering maximum protection. Most roll down shutters are single walled, but if you’re feeling a bit “extra”, you can get double-walled as well.
Manual:
Standard window (36” x 60”) $1,300
Standard door (36” x 80”) $1,600
Sliding glass door:(72” x 80”) $2,200
Motorized:
Standard window (36” x 60”) $1,800
Standard door (36” x 80”) $2,100
Sliding glass door:(72” x 80”) $2,700
Bahama Shutters provide both a decorative touch and protection against hurricanes. Bahamas are extremely popular on the beach houses but also inland throughout Wilmington and surrounding areas. There are two types of Bahama shutters – rated and decorative. Rated are hurricane rated (passing several industry tests) and decorative bahamas are purely for decoration.
Decorative Bahamas:
Standard window (36” x 60”) $875
Double window (72” x 60”) $1,750
Rated Bahamas:
Standard window (36” x 60”) $975
Double window (72” x 60”) $1,950
Hurricane Screens have similar functionality as roll down shutters as they can also be manual or motorized and roll down from the top housing on vertical tracks. Screens offer great protection while also providing visibility out. Most homeowners choose screens when protecting an open area like a covered porch or patio.
Motorized:
Standard window (36” x 60”) $2,100
Standard door (36” x 80”) $2,400
Sliding glass door:(72” x 80”) $3,000
Large opening (10 ft wide x 9 ft tall) $4,200
What makes an install complicated?
A majority of installs are pretty straight forward and simple, but every now and then we get a curveball thrown at us. Sometimes installing hurricane shutters requires us to “pack out” the rails to clear any obstructions, like door handles, that prevent the shutters from rolling down. Pulling power to operate the shutters can also present a challenge, but is typically easily solved by bringing in one of our preferred electricians.
